Heavenly Creatures says a group of teenagers may be responsible for an extreme case of animal neglect involving a kitten in St. John's.

The animal rescue groups says the abandoned 12-week-old kitten was found with its eyeball coming out of its socket after extreme trauma. The kitten was reportedly seen the day before among a group of teenagers on Pennywell Road.

A rescue volunteer took the animal to St. John's Vet Clinic where it was rushed through as an emergency case.

Heavenly Creatures' President Jessica Rendell said the kitten's eye cannot be saved.

"The cornea is crushed and swelling is pushing the remains of the eyeball out of the swelling socket."

The kitten will go into surgery to have the eye removed.

Rendell said the veterinarian noted the kitten had been left for some time without anyone caring to get it medical attention.

The kitten was given pain injections and after a regimen of antibiotics and pain meds over the next few weeks, will learn to see life through only one eye.

Rescue volunteer Jennifer Barnable said the kitten, "nestled under my chin, purring and giving kisses despite being in such a horrible state, and considering the pain he was in. He's suffered like this for a long time, it appears. It's sickening that someone could do this to a baby animal, and even worse for people in the area to turn a blind eye and not do a thing to help."

Heavenly Creatures is asking the public to come forward with any information they have on this kitten, and for those animal lovers and concerned citizens to make a donation to help the group continue its animal rescue work.
