More than 1,500 birds believed to be part of an alleged cockfighting ring in unincorporated Livermore have been euthanized. The fighting birds as well as hens and some chicks had to put down, said Alameda County Sheriff's Lt. Kelly Miles.

"It's the law," Miles said, saying the birds were not good for anything except but fighting.

Last week, Animal Control officers euthanized 1,300 birds at a location in the 4400 block of North Livermore Avenue and another 289 birds at a second location off Tesla Road.

The corpses were disposed of by an outside company.

Fifteen other birds at the Tesla location had died of disease, Miles said.

Sheriff's deputies discovered the suspected ring in January after receiving an anonymous tip that fighting was going on in the area.

Seven people who were watching a cockfight at the North Livermore Avenue location were arrested and charged, Miles said.
